A Study on Understanding of Tuberculosis in New Patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis


Abstract
This study was performed to provide a basic information to be utilized by nurses to manage .a treatment schedule effectively for the patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.
The- questionnaires regarding the knowledge and attitude toward tuberculosis were answered by 285 patients who were newly diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis at the tuberculosis clinic of Kwang ju Christian Hospital from April I to September 30, 1976.
The following results were obtained:
1) Only 73.7% of all knew tuberculosis to be "communicable disease", but 42.9% of the illiterate group answered "don¢¥t know".
2) On the mode of infection, 36.8% of all answered "by air" and 32% "by case contact". But, the answer were "by fly" in 42.9% of the illiterate group and "don¢¥t know" in 47.6% of the moderately advanced group on chest X-ray.
3) As to the knowledge of preventive measures about tuberculosis, there were more respondents on BCG innoculation (40.7%) than on isolation of case (31.6 %), of the latter which was thought more by the college, the agricultural and. the far advanced group on chest X-ray.
4) On the diagnostic methods of pulmonary tuberculosis, 71.8% of all knew chest X-ray or sputum examination without group specificity.
5) Motivations to take chest X-ray were in order "others (by chance)" (40.1. %), "by official recommendation" (30.5%), "recommended by neighbor or relatives" (19.3%) and "by oneself" (10. 1%).
6) 80.0% Of all knew tuberculosis "curable disease", that was in proportion, to level of education but not to degree of tuberculosis on chest X-ray.
